Our Raw Chindi Patchwork Kantha quilts are hand made in a patchwork of naturally dyed, organic kala cotton fabrics, handwoven for us in Kutch.  The patchwork is pieced together and sewn with the raw edges of the seams left exposed on the upper face of the quilt, rather than on the back.  The kantha stitches, executed by hand, run diagonally across the quilt to hold the frayed edges down.  The outside edges of the quilt are also left raw and frayed, but are contained by two lines of stitching all around.

This quilt is a lighter weight than our Chindi Quilt, having no wadding inside, so it's perfect for warmer months and climes.

The finished quilts are treated to a special wash which gives them a wonderful soft feel and handle.

Our makers ad lib a little with the patchwork, so no two quilts are exactly the same, although the fabrics used are.

The kantha stitching in these quilts is skillfully executed by hand by our master quilt maker in Gujarat.  The tiny stitches are close together in neat rows, which sets them apart from many cheaper kantha stitched pieces on the market.  And this gives the quilt surface a lovely texture.

Kala cotton, or old world cotton, as it is sometimes known, is an ancient species of drought resistant cotton which has been grown in Kutch since 3000 BC.  The growers do not use pesticides or synthetic fertilisers, and it is watered only by rainfall.  The fabrics it produces are soft but durable.

We buy our kala fabrics from an initiative in Kutch dedicated to the continued production of this ancient cotton, and the preservation of local artisan weaving traditions.  Sometimes, there are small irregularities in the weave which are part of the natural charm of this handmade product.

Reverse in off-white plain organic kala cotton.

Small Quilt: 208 x 160cm (82" x 63")

Large Quilt: 260 x 240cm (102" x 95") - covers a UK size double bed.

Bespoke sizes also available - please enquire.
